Sempervivum tectorum 'Squib' is a cultivated variety of the species Sempervivum tectorum, which is native to mountainous regions of southern Europe, particularly in the Pyrenees, Alps, and the Balkans. The species typically grows in rocky outcrops, roof crevices, and other well-drained, sunlit sites. This cultivar forms compact rosettes with symmetrical, fleshy leaves that range from green to reddish tones, with colour intensity influenced by seasonal temperature and light levels.
The rosettes produce offsets readily, forming dense mats over time. Each leaf is slightly pointed at the tip and often edged with fine cilia. Seasonal changes can bring more pronounced red or purple hues, especially in cooler weather or under strong sunlight. As a monocarpic plant, each rosette flowers once before dying, producing a tall, starry inflorescence that attracts pollinators.
Flowering typically occurs in summer, with blooms in shades of pink to reddish-purple. After flowering, offsets ensure the continuation of the clump. This growth habit and drought tolerance make it well-suited to rock gardens, containers, and green roofs, echoing the species’ traditional use on European rooftops.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun for best colour development; can tolerate partial sun but with less intense leaf colour.
- Water: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry between waterings. More frequent watering may be needed in containers during summer heat.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity and good airflow to prevent rot.
- Media: Well-drained, gritty soil mix; avoid heavy or water-retentive soils.
- Temperature: Tolerates a wide range; hardy to freezing temperatures and suitable for outdoor growth year-round in temperate climates.
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertiliser if desired.
- Repotting: Repot or divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and space for offsets.
