Sempervivum 'Weightons Red' is a cultivated hybrid within the Sempervivum genus, bred for its seasonal red-toned foliage. Like other Sempervivums, its parent species originate from mountainous areas of Europe, where they grow in rocky, well-drained habitats with full sun exposure. This cultivar forms tight rosettes of fleshy, pointed leaves that shift in colour through the year, with the deepest red shades often appearing in cooler weather or under high light.
The rosettes spread gradually by producing offsets, creating dense clusters over time. Leaves may display a mix of red, burgundy, and green depending on temperature and light levels. As with all Sempervivums, each rosette is monocarpic and will flower once before dying, but offset production ensures the plant continues to grow and fill its space.
Flowering generally occurs in summer, with tall stems bearing star-shaped blooms in pink to reddish hues that attract pollinating insects. The plant’s growth habit, drought tolerance, and cold hardiness make it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, and container plantings, as well as traditional roof gardens.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun promotes the strongest red colour; partial sun may result in more green tones.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings; increase slightly in hot, dry weather.
- Humidity: Low humidity with good airflow helps prevent rot.
- Media: Use a gritty, free-draining soil mix; avoid water-retentive soils.
- Temperature: Cold hardy and tolerant of frost; suitable for outdoor growth year-round in temperate regions.
- Fertiliser: Apply a light feed in spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser if required.
- Repotting: Divide and replant offsets every few years to maintain vigour and avoid overcrowding.
