Senecio rowleyanus 'Angel's Tears' is a cultivated form of the species Senecio rowleyanus, native to the dry regions of South Africa. In the wild, the species grows along sandy ground or cascades over rocky ledges, rooting at stem nodes when conditions allow. This cultivar is known for its smaller, more closely spaced bead-like leaves compared to the standard form, giving the stems a denser appearance. The leaves store water, an adaptation for surviving extended dry periods in its native habitat.
Stems can reach over a metre in length, hanging or trailing in a compact curtain of foliage. Each leaf has a small translucent window that allows light to penetrate deeper into the tissues, supporting photosynthesis in the rounded structure. The reduced leaf size in this cultivar gives it a finer texture while maintaining the same drought-tolerant traits as the species.
Mature plants may flower in cooler months when given sufficient light and a short dry rest. The blooms are small, white, and brush-like, with red stamens and a light cinnamon fragrance. In cultivation, flowering is more likely when seasonal care replicates the natural rhythms of its native environment.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; some morning sun is beneficial. Low light can lead to stretched growth and reduced density.
- Water: Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Water less in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity; ensure airflow to reduce rot risk.
- Media: Use a coarse, free-draining succulent or cactus mix.
- Temperature: Best kept between 18–26°C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted succulent fertiliser.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when media has broken down; handle gently to avoid damaging stems.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
