Senecio rowleyanus 'String of Pearls'
check_circle In Stock
Senecio rowleyanus, commonly known as String of Pearls, is a trailing succulent species native to the arid parts of southwestern Africa, especially Namibia where it threads through rocky ground beneath shrubs. The species forms long, pendent stems that creep or cascade, rooting at nodes when they touch soil. Many growers and references now place it in the genus Curio as Curio rowleyanus, but it is widely sold under the older name.
The leaves are spherical and bead-like, each with a small translucent window that allows light deeper into the tissue. This adaptation reduces water loss in high light and low humidity habitats while still enabling photosynthesis. Stems are slender and easily break if handled roughly, yet cut segments re-root readily when laid on a gritty mix.
Flowering typically occurs in the warmer months under strong light and good culture. The flower heads are small and white with prominent stamens, and they release a noticeable cinnamon-like scent that attracts pollinators. Seeds are small and tufted, suited to wind dispersal, although vegetative propagation is the usual method in cultivation.
Care Tips:
- Light — Very bright light with a few hours of gentle direct sun. Indoors, place near the brightest window to prevent stretching.
- Water — Soak and allow the mix to dry through before watering again. Water less in winter and avoid letting the pot sit in water.
- Humidity — Low to moderate is best with good airflow.
- Media — Use a fast-draining, gritty succulent mix with high mineral content. A shallow pot helps the roots dry evenly.
- Temperature — Ideal 15–27°C. Protect from cold; avoid prolonged exposure below 5°C.
- Fertiliser — Light feeding in spring and summer using a balanced, dilute fertiliser. Do not overfeed, which can cause weak, sparse growth.
- Repotting — Repot every 1–2 years to refresh the mix. Handle gently to avoid snapping stems. Cuttings root easily after a short callus period.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic.
