Sinningia 'Crushed Velvet' is a hybrid between Sinningia bullata and Sinningia leucotricha, combining the distinctive foliage of both parent species. It grows from a tuber, producing stems lined with bullate, velvety leaves that carry the deep green surface and reddish undersides of S. bullata, often with a silvery sheen influenced by S. leucotricha.
Flowering occurs in the warmer months, with clusters of tubular blooms that may show orange to reddish tones, inherited from S. bullata, or muted hues with a hint of silver from S. leucotricha. Like its parents, it follows a seasonal growth cycle, becoming dormant in cooler months when foliage dies back to the tuber.
Care Tips:
Light: Provide bright, indirect light with some gentle morning sun.
Water: Water regularly during active growth, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings; keep dry during dormancy.
Media: Use a free-draining, coarse mix suitable for tuberous plants.
Temperature: Maintain warm conditions while in growth; protect from cold and frost.
Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser every 3–4 weeks in the active season.
Repotting: Repot in spring at the onset of new growth, placing the tuber just below the soil surface.
