Stanhopea inodora × oculata – Collector's Specimen Orchid
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
These are exceptional specimen plants of Stanhopea inodora × oculata, grown on for many years to produce large, established clumps ready to become the centrepiece of any orchid collection. Unlike small divisions, these plants have reached an impressive size and, once transferred into a large slatted basket, are expected to produce spectacular flowering displays in the coming early summer season.
Stanhopea inodora × oculata combines the broad, sculptural flowers of S. inodora with the dramatic eye-like markings inherited from S. oculata. The large, waxy blooms emerge on pendant spikes that grow through the bottom of the basket, creating one of the most unusual and rewarding flowering displays found in orchids.
Distinctive Features
- Premium Specimen Plants: Large, mature clumps grown over many years.
- Flowering Size: Expected to flower during the coming early summer season under suitable growing conditions.
- Spectacular Blooms: Large, waxy flowers with broad segments and striking eye-like markings.
- Pendant Flower Spikes: Inflorescences emerge from beneath the basket, creating a unique cascading display.
- Collector's Orchid: An impressive and rewarding species for growers with adequate space.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright filtered light or dappled shade. Protect from harsh afternoon sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist throughout active growth. Never allow the plant to dry completely.
- Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity with excellent air movement.
- Media: Best grown in a large slatted orchid basket or open net pot using a coarse, free-draining orchid mix so flower spikes can emerge freely.
- Temperature: Intermediate to warm (15–28°C). Protect from prolonged cold.
- Fertiliser: Feed fortnightly with a balanced orchid fertiliser during active growth, reducing feeding over winter.
- Repotting: These specimens should be transferred into a large basket with minimal disturbance to the root system.
Important Information
These are genuine one-off specimen plants. Each has developed differently over many years, so no two are identical. Once sold, they cannot be replaced. We recommend potting into the largest practical slatted basket to allow future growth and to provide ample room for the pendant flower spikes to develop naturally.
