Stetsonia coryne – The Toothpick Cactus
Stetsonia coryne, commonly called the Toothpick Cactus, is a tall and imposing columnar species native to the arid regions of Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. It is known for its long, needle-like spines that resemble toothpicks, and its striking silhouette that makes it a standout in desert landscapes. This fast-growing cactus can reach impressive heights of up to 10 metres in its natural habitat.
Distinctive Features
- Long Spines: Characteristic ivory-white, needle-like spines that can reach up to 12 cm in length.
- Columnar Growth: Develops thick, ribbed, upright stems that form large candelabra-like branching structures.
- Night-Blooming Flowers: Produces large, white, nocturnal flowers that attract pollinators such as moths and bats.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Water: Requires minimal watering; allow soil to dry completely between watering sessions.
- Humidity: Prefers dry conditions; low humidity is ideal.
- Temperature: Tolerates high heat but should be protected from prolonged frost (< 5°C).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer) for optimal growth.
- Potting: Requires well-draining soil, preferably a sandy or gritty cactus mix.
- Propagation: Can be grown from seeds, though germination is slow.
Additional Notes
- Highly drought-resistant and well-adapted to desert environments.
- Can be grown in containers but needs ample space due to its size.
- Spines can cause injury; handle with care.
- Non-toxic to pets but should still be kept out of reach due to sharp spines.
With its towering presence and striking spines, Stetsonia coryne is a fantastic addition to arid gardens or xeriscapes. Its low maintenance needs and impressive resilience make it an excellent choice for experienced cacti collectors and desert plant enthusiasts alike.
