Tacitus bellus

Tacitus bellus, now more widely accepted as Graptopetalum bellum, is a compact succulent species native to the mountainous regions of Chihuahua, Mexico. It grows in rocky crevices at elevations around 1,400-2,000 metres, where it experiences cool, dry winters and warm summers. The plant forms tight rosettes of triangular, dark green to almost blackish leaves, which often take on deeper tones under strong light. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of star-shaped, vivid pink to magenta flowers on short, upright stems, each bloom displaying a darker central pattern and lasting for several days. Unusually for a succulent, it is adapted to cooler night temperatures, making it more tolerant of mild frosts than many other genera.
Care Tips:
- Light - Prefers bright light with some direct sun; intense midday sun in very hot climates may require light shade.
- Water - Water thoroughly but infrequently during the growing season; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity - Thrives in low humidity with good airflow.
- Media - Requires a sharply draining succulent mix with added grit or pumice.
- Temperature - Best grown between 10-27 °C; can tolerate mild frost if kept dry.
- Fertiliser - Feed lightly with a low-nitrogen fertiliser during active growth.
- Repotting - Repot every 2-3 years or when offsets crowd the pot; handle carefully to avoid leaf damage.
