Tillandsia cacticola 'Splendide'
Tillandsia cacticola 'Splendide' is a cultivated form of the Peruvian species Tillandsia cacticola, known for its striking silver foliage and large, pale lavender flowers. The species is native to high-altitude dry forests and rocky outcrops in the Andes of northern Peru, where it grows under intense sun and wide temperature fluctuations. It forms a dense rosette of silvery, arching leaves and produces a tall, upright inflorescence with soft, violet-tinged petals and creamy bracts—considered among the most elegant floral displays in the genus.
Distinctive features:
- Silvery foliage with dense trichomes adapted to bright, arid conditions
- Produces large, showy lavender to pale violet flowers
- Inflorescence emerges on a tall, straight scape with cream-coloured bracts
- Leaves form a symmetrical, arching rosette 20–25 cm across
- Rare among Tillandsias in combining size, fragrance, and floral delicacy
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright light to full sun; well-suited for outdoor culture in warm climates
- Water: Mist 2–3 times weekly or soak occasionally; ensure quick drying
- Humidity: Moderate humidity is sufficient with good airflow
- Media: Mount on wood or stone; display upright to support the tall bloom
- Temperature: Ideal range is 14–28°C; tolerates cooler nights if dry
- Fertiliser: Use diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during active growth
Additional Notes:
- One of the few fragrant flowering Tillandsias when conditions are ideal
- Highly sought after by collectors for its refined floral structure
- Requires more time to reach flowering maturity but rewards with an exceptional display
- Not toxic to pets
