The Medusa's Head Air Plant: A Captivating Epiphyte (Bulk Pack of 10)
Tillandsia caput-medusae, aptly named the Medusa's Head air plant, is a truly captivating species that will bring a touch of the extraordinary to your home or garden. Native to Central America and Mexico, this unique epiphyte is prized for its unusual snake-like leaves and vibrant blooms.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Long, silvery-green leaves that curl and twist, resembling the serpents of Medusa's head. These leaves are covered in trichomes, which are tiny scales that help the plant absorb moisture and nutrients from the air.
- Flowers: Produces vibrant, tubular flowers that emerge from the centre of the plant. The flowers are typically red or pink and add a splash of colour to this already fascinating plant.
- Growth Habit: This Tillandsia has a bulbous base and grows in a rosette form. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces without the need for soil.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east- or west-facing window is ideal.
- Water: Mist the plants thoroughly 2-3 times a week, ensuring that excess water drains away. Alternatively, you can soak the plants in a bowl of water for 20-30 minutes once a week. Allow the plants to dry completely before returning them to their display location.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for Tillandsias. Ensure that the plants are not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 10-32°C (50-90°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing these tropical plants to frost or freezing temperatures.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted bromeliad or orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Display: Tillandsia caput-medusae can be displayed in a variety of ways. You can place them in a decorative bowl, hang them from a string, or mount them on a piece of driftwood or cork bark.
