Tillandsia edithae
Tillandsia edithae is an epiphytic bromeliad native to the rocky cliffs of Bolivia, where it thrives in arid conditions. This unique air plant is prized for its silvery-green, trichome-covered leaves and striking coral-red flower spikes. Unlike many other Tillandsia species, it produces a large, showy bloom that can persist for weeks, making it a favourite among collectors.
Distinctive Features:
- Silvery-green leaves covered in fine trichomes, aiding moisture absorption.
- Produces a striking coral-red inflorescence with tubular flowers.
- Typically forms a clumping growth habit over time.
- Thrives in dry, rocky environments with good air circulation.
- Can be mounted on wood, stone, or hung in wire frames without soil.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light; can tolerate some direct sun.
- Water: Mist 2–3 times a week, ensuring water drains well to prevent rot; soak occasionally in dry conditions.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate humidity but adapts well to drier air with proper hydration.
- Media: Grows best mounted on driftwood, stone, or other breathable surfaces—does not require soil.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures between 15–28°C but can tolerate occasional cooler nights.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly with a diluted bromeliad or orchid fertiliser during active growth.
Additional Notes:
- Its vibrant flowers attract pollinators such as hummingbirds in the wild.
- Best grown in an airy environment with good circulation to prevent rot.
- Non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with animals.
With its striking appearance and minimal care needs, Tillandsia edithae is a great addition to any air plant collection. Its vibrant blooms provide a splash of colour, while its silvery foliage adds a touch of elegance. Perfect for mounted displays, terrariums, or as a hanging feature, this resilient species is an excellent choice for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
