Tillandsia ehlersiana
Tillandsia ehlersiana is a grey-leaved species native to the semi-arid regions of Chiapas, Mexico. It grows in dry oak forests and on rocky outcrops, typically at elevations between 600 and 1,000 metres. The plant is covered in dense trichomes, giving it a silvery appearance and helping it retain moisture in its warm, dry habitat. Its inflorescence is simple, producing tubular purple flowers. This species tends to favour more exposed conditions and is particularly drought-tolerant.
Distinctive Features
- Densely trichomed leaves: The plant's thick coating of fine hairs gives it a silvery-white appearance while aiding in moisture collection from the air.
- Twisting rosette form: Leaves spiral gracefully from the centre, creating a compact, sculptural aesthetic.
- Unusual inflorescence: Produces a tubular, bright violet flower from a pink bract, often appearing after several years of growth.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; tolerates some direct morning sun.
- Water: Mist 2–3 times weekly in summer; reduce in winter. Ensure full drying between waterings.
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate humidity; 50–60% is ideal.
- Media: No soil required; mount on wood, cork, or wire with good airflow.
- Temperature: Thrives in 12–28°C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a bromeliad or orchid fertiliser monthly during growing season, diluted to ¼ strength.
- Repotting: Not applicable; instead, reposition mounts as needed or separate pups once mature.
Additional Notes
- This species is known for its longevity and may take several years to reach flowering maturity.
- It is non-toxic to pets, making it a safe option for homes with animals.
- Ideal for mounting in terrariums, vertical gardens, or minimalist air plant displays.
