Tillandsia ionantha ex. Mexico
Tillandsia ionantha ex. Mexico refers to a form of the species originating from native populations in Mexico, where it inhabits warm, tropical and subtropical forests at varying elevations, often growing on trees in bright, humid conditions. This form is known for its compact shape and relatively thick, densely trichomed leaves, which blush a brilliant red when nearing bloom. Violet flowers emerge from the vivid central rosette, forming a classic contrast. It is one of the more robust and widely grown geographical forms of the species, well-suited to a variety of growing environments.
Distinctive features:
- Compact rosette typically 4–6 cm tall
- Foliage flushes intense red at bloom time, especially under strong light
- Violet tubular flowers emerge from the flushed centre
- Leaves are thick and heavily coated in silvery trichomes
- Forms dense clusters over time through prolific offsetting
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; stronger light enhances colouration
- Water: Mist 3–4 times weekly or soak once per week; always allow to dry completely
- Humidity: Performs well in moderate to high humidity with airflow
- Media: Mount on bark, cork, or other open surfaces; no soil required
- Temperature: Ideal range is 16–30°C; avoid exposure to frost
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during active growth
Additional Notes:
- One of the most reliable and widely cultivated ionantha forms
- Suited to indoor or outdoor cultivation in sheltered, bright locations
- Often used in mounted displays, terrariums, or small decorative planters
- Not toxic to pets
