cancel Sold out
The Tillandsia ionantha is a beloved air plant variety that is prized for its vibrant colours and ease of care. This particular specimen is an established clump, showcasing the plant's natural tendency to form clusters of rosettes. Its impressive size and healthy growth make it a desirable addition to any plant collection. Native to Central America and Mexico, this xerophyte has evolved to thrive in arid conditions, making it a relatively low-maintenance houseplant.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for this Tillandsia. Direct sunlight can intensify the red colouration but may also scorch the leaves, so it's best to provide some shade during peak sun hours.
- Water: Mist the plant thoroughly 2-3 times a week, allowing it to dry completely between waterings. Alternatively, you can soak the plant in water for about 30 minutes once a week. Ensure the plant dries completely after soaking to prevent rot.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is preferred. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant in a humid environment, such as a bathroom.
- Temperature: This Tillandsia prefers temperatures between 15-27°C (59-81°F). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted bromeliad or air plant fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This air plant doesn't require soil. You can display it in a variety of ways, such as placing it in a decorative container, mounting it on driftwood, or simply laying it on a flat surface. Ensure good air circulation to prevent rot.
- Propagation: Tillandsia ionantha can be propagated through offsets, also known as pups, which grow at the base of the mother plant. Carefully remove the pups when they are about one-third the size of the mother plant.
