Tillandsia pringlei (WA Prohibited)
release_alert Low Stock - 2 available
Tillandsia pringlei is a striking, xeric species endemic to the arid highlands of central Mexico, where it grows on rocky cliffs and dry slopes at elevations between 1,500 and 2,400 metres. It is characterised by its upright, rigid growth and densely silvered foliage, adapted to intense light and minimal moisture. The leaves are thick and heavily coated in trichomes, helping the plant capture moisture from dew and occasional rainfall. This species produces a tall, simple inflorescence with tubular, reddish-purple flowers. It is slow-growing and particularly suited to bright, dry environments.
Distinctive features:
- Rigid, upright growth with thick, narrow silver-grey leaves
- Highly xerophytic, adapted to full sun and dry conditions
- Produces tall, spike-like inflorescence with reddish-purple tubular flowers
- Leaf surfaces densely covered with trichomes for water absorption
- Native to rocky habitats of central Mexico at high elevations
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires bright light to full sun; ideal for sunlit windows or outdoor exposure
- Water: Soak or mist once or twice weekly; must dry quickly and completely
- Humidity: Adapts to low humidity; benefits from airflow to prevent moisture buildup
- Media: Mount on stone, cork, or driftwood; avoid potting media
- Temperature: Prefers 18–32°C; can tolerate brief drops if kept dry
- Fertiliser: Use a low-nitrogen, diluted tillandsia fertiliser once a month
Additional Notes:
- Well-suited for dry climate gardens or high-light interiors
- Rare in cultivation due to slow growth and habitat specificity
- Ideal for collectors interested in xeric Tillandsia species
- Not toxic to pets
