Tillandsia schiedeana is a widely distributed species of air plant occurring from Mexico to northern South America, often found on trees or rocks in dry forests, semi-arid regions, and even coastal scrublands. It thrives at a range of elevations, from near sea level to over 2,000 metres. This species is noted for its adaptability and ease of cultivation. Its narrow, silvery-green leaves form a loose rosette and it produces small, tubular yellow flowers, which are sometimes tinged with red. It is named after the German botanist Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede.
Distinctive features:
- Produces yellow tubular flowers, uncommon among Tillandsias
- Covered in fine trichomes that give the plant a silvery appearance
- Flexible stems allow it to sprawl or clamber over surfaces
- Frequently forms small clumps through prolific offsetting
- Capable of thriving in both dry and humid environments
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright indirect light to partial sun; avoid prolonged deep shade
- Water: Mist 2–3 times per week or soak briefly; ensure it dries fully
- Humidity: Tolerates a broad humidity range, but benefits from good ventilation
- Media: Best mounted on bark, driftwood, or stone without soil
- Temperature: Thrives between 10–30°C; can tolerate brief dips below 10°C
Additional Notes:
- May flower more than once if mature offsets grow at staggered times
- Adapts well to drier climates compared to many other Tillandsias
- Flowers are attractive to pollinators including hummingbirds in the wild
- Not toxic to pets
