Tillandsia streptophylla
check_circle In Stock
Tillandsia streptophylla is a distinctive species distributed from southern Mexico through Central America and into parts of the Caribbean, where it typically grows on trees in dry, open woodlands and savannahs. It is easily recognised by its thick, bulbous base and strongly curling, succulent-like leaves. The degree of curl varies depending on humidity—tight in dry air and looser in more humid conditions. During flowering, it produces a tall, branched inflorescence with pastel pink to red bracts and violet tubular flowers. This species is highly drought-tolerant and well suited to bright, airy conditions.
Distinctive features:
- Bulbous base with thick, curling leaves that respond to humidity levels
- Foliage covered in dense trichomes for excellent moisture capture
- Tall, branched floral spike with pastel pink to red bracts
- Violet tubular flowers emerge successively from the inflorescence
- Highly sculptural, with a form that varies in response to its environment
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires bright, indirect to direct light; ideal for windowsills or sheltered outdoor spaces
- Water: Mist 2–3 times weekly or soak briefly; ensure rapid drying, especially around the base
- Humidity: Tolerates low humidity; curls tighten in drier air and loosen with higher humidity
- Media: Mount on cork, driftwood, or wire; avoid planting in soil or enclosed terrariums
- Temperature: Thrives in 18–30°C; protect from cold, especially if exposed to moisture
- Fertiliser: Use diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly in the growing season
Additional Notes:
- Popular for its unusual form and dynamic leaf shape
- Well suited to mounted displays or suspended arrangements
- May hybridise naturally in cultivation with other bulbous Tillandsias
- Not toxic to pets
