Tillandsia stricta 'Green'
Tillandsia stricta 'Green' is a cultivated form of the species Tillandsia stricta, known for its lush green foliage and rapid growth cycle. Native to parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, this air plant typically inhabits warm, humid environments where it grows on tree branches and occasionally rocks. The 'Green' form retains the species’ compact, rosette-forming structure but features glossy green leaves instead of the silver-grey typical of more xeric types. When flowering, it produces vivid pink bracts and delicate violet flowers, often within its first year of growth.
Distinctive features:
- Glossy green foliage with minimal trichome coverage
- Produces bright pink floral bracts and soft violet blooms
- Forms a compact rosette, usually 10–15 cm in diameter
- More moisture-loving than the silver form of the species
- Offsets quickly and can form clumps within a few seasons
Care Tips:
- Light: Enjoys bright, filtered light; protect from harsh midday sun
- Water: Mist 3–4 times weekly or soak gently once per week; ensure thorough drying
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; appreciates airflow
- Media: Mount on bark or wood; can also be displayed in open terrariums with ventilation
- Temperature: Best kept between 16–28°C; protect from cold drafts
- Fertiliser: Use diluted bromeliad or tillandsia fertiliser monthly in the growing season
Additional Notes:
- Faster to bloom and pup than many other Tillandsias
- Well-suited for indoor environments with bright light
- Can be combined with silver forms for contrast in display
- Not toxic to pets
