Tillandsia tectorum 'Filiform' (Enano) - Rare & Desirable One-Off
One-Off Tillandsia tectorum 'Filiform' (Enano) - Rare & Desirable
The Tillandsia tectorum 'Filiform' is a captivating air plant variety that is sure to be a conversation starter in any plant collection. This unique specimen is a true testament to the diversity and beauty of the Tillandsia genus. Its distinctive long caulescent form, coupled with its rare 'Enano' characteristics, makes it a sought-after addition to any plant enthusiast's home. Native to the high-altitude deserts of the Andes Mountains in Ecuador and Peru, this xerophyte has evolved to thrive in arid conditions, making it a relatively low-maintenance houseplant.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: The 'Filiform' boasts slender, silvery-white leaves that are densely covered in trichomes, giving it a fuzzy appearance. These trichomes help the plant to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air.
- Growth Habit: This variety exhibits a striking long caulescent growth habit, meaning it produces a long, trailing stem. This is a unique characteristic not commonly seen in other Tillandsia varieties.
- Size: This particular specimen is of the 'Enano' form, meaning it is a smaller and more compact version of the typical 'Filiform'. This makes it a very desirable and collectible variety.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for this Tillandsia. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Mist the plant thoroughly 2-3 times a week, allowing it to dry completely between waterings. Alternatively, you can soak the plant in water for about 30 minutes once a week. Ensure the plant dries completely after soaking to prevent rot.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is preferred. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant in a humid environment, such as a bathroom.
- Temperature: This Tillandsia prefers temperatures between 15-27°C (59-81°F). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted bromeliad or air plant fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This air plant doesn't require soil. You can display it in a variety of ways, such as mounting it on driftwood, placing it in a decorative container, or simply laying it on a flat surface. Ensure good air circulation to prevent rot.
- Propagation: Tillandsia tectorum 'Filiform' (Enano) can be propagated through offsets, also known as pups, which grow at the base of the mother plant. Carefully remove the pups when they are about one-third the size of the mother plant.
