Tillandsia tenuifolia 'Emerald Forest'
Tillandsia tenuifolia 'Emerald Forest' is a compact cultivar of the species T. tenuifolia, noted for its deep green, narrow leaves and tidy rosette form. Unlike many other forms, 'Emerald Forest' maintains a particularly lush, glossy foliage with a slightly softer texture. Native forms of T. tenuifolia are widespread in coastal and mountainous regions of Brazil, often growing in humid forests where airflow is high.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Slender, triangular leaves that are typically 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches). The leaves are a vibrant emerald green colour and are covered in fine trichomes, giving them a slightly fuzzy texture.
- Flowers: Produces delicate, tubular flowers that emerge from a brightly coloured inflorescence. The flowers are typically white or pale pink.
- Growth Habit: This Tillandsia has a compact, rosette-forming growth habit. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: Mist the plant thoroughly 2-3 times a week, ensuring that excess water drains away. Alternatively, you can soak the plant in a bowl of water for 20-30 minutes once a week. Allow the plant to dry completely before returning it to its display location.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for Tillandsias. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 15-29°C (59-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted bromeliad or orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Mounting: Tillandsia tenuifolia 'Emerald Forest' can be mounted on various surfaces, such as driftwood, cork bark, or even decorative rocks. Use fishing line, wire, or glue to securely attach the plant to its mount.
Additional Notes:
- Flowers are delicate in tone and often produced in succession
- Forms clumps slowly with regular care
- Ideal for small displays or mixed Tillandsia arrangements
- Not toxic to pets
