The Echinopsis pasacana, also known as the Giant Cardon Cactus, is a truly awe-inspiring columnar cactus that dominates the landscapes of the Andes Mountains in South America. Previously known as Trichocereus pasacana, this majestic plant is renowned for its towering presence, reaching heights of up to 10 metres (33 feet) and a diameter of up to 70 centimetres (28 inches). Its massive, columnar stems are a testament to its resilience and longevity, making it a true icon of the arid regions it calls home.
Distinctive Features
- Size: Massive, columnar stems that can reach up to 10m (33ft) in height and 70cm (28in) in diameter.
- Spines: Long, sharp spines that cover the plant's body.
- Flowers: White, fragrant flowers that bloom at night in the summer.
Care Tips
- Light: Full sun.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Low humidity.
- Temperature: 10-30°C (50-86°F). Can tolerate light frost.
- Fertiliser: Fertilise once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
- Potting: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent mix. Repot every 2-3 years.
- Propagation: Propagate from seed or cuttings.
