Soehrensia spachiana, synonym Trichocereus spachianus and commonly called the Golden Torch Cactus, is native to the northwest of Argentina, where it grows in arid to semi-arid regions. In habitat, it can form tall, upright columns reaching up to 2 m in height, often developing multiple stems from the base. The stems are mid-green with well-defined ribs, each rib lined with clusters of short golden-yellow spines that give the plant its common name. In summer, mature plants produce large, fragrant, white flowers that open at night and may extend into the morning. These flowers are typically pollinated by moths or other nocturnal insects, and are followed by small, fleshy fruits.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and flowering.
- Water: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
- Media: Use a sharply draining cactus mix.
- Temperature: Tolerates heat; protect from prolonged frost.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced cactus fertiliser during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the root system fills the container, taking care with the spines.
