Turbinicarpus krainzianus (WA Prohibited)

Turbinicarpus krainzianus is a distinctive miniature cactus from northern Mexico, prized by collectors for its unusual tangled spination and compact growth habit. Rather than forming ribs like many cacti, the body is made up of tight spirals of tubercles, each producing fine, flexible white spines that curl and tangle over the crown to form a distinctive “hairy” appearance.

In cultivation this species can remain solitary for many years, though older plants may slowly form clusters. Mature specimens often develop characterful shapes as the tubercles elongate and the crown becomes densely wrapped in spines. In spring and early summer, plants produce elegant funnel-shaped flowers that are typically white to pale pink with a darker pink midstripe.

Despite its delicate appearance, Turbinicarpus krainzianus is a surprisingly resilient species when grown in a very free-draining mineral mix and kept dry during cool weather. Like many species in the genus, it appreciates bright light and careful watering rather than frequent feeding.
