Schlumbergera (Zygocactus) 'Cyber Dancer'
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Schlumbergera 'Cyber Dancer' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, more commonly referred to as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its parent species are native to the coastal mountain forests of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in shaded, humid environments. In their natural setting, these plants root in moss-covered tree branches or rocky crevices, enjoying filtered light, regular moisture, and excellent drainage.
The stems are composed of flattened, jointed segments (phylloclades) with shallow notches along the margins. 'Cyber Dancer' is noted for its striking bicoloured flowers, typically white at the base with vivid magenta to purple edges, creating a bold contrast. The tubular blooms emerge from the tips of mature segments and are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds. Its arching to cascading habit makes it well suited for hanging baskets or elevated planters.
Flowering is triggered by shorter day lengths and cooler night temperatures, generally in late autumn to early winter. With proper seasonal cues and attentive care, 'Cyber Dancer' can produce a spectacular display of blooms each year.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Morning or late afternoon sun can enhance flower colour, but protect from harsh midday rays to prevent stem scorch.
- Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during growth and flowering. After blooms fade, reduce watering slightly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry before rewatering.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Use a pebble tray with water or mist occasionally during dry indoor conditions.
- Media: Use a free-draining, slightly acidic mix containing orchid bark, peat, and perlite to replicate natural epiphytic conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Switch to a high-potassium formula before flowering to promote bud formation.
- Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C during the growing season. To encourage bud set, provide night temperatures of 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
- Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, refreshing the mix and increasing pot size only if necessary.
- Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, and plant in a well-draining mix.
