Schlumbergera (Zygocactus) 'Thor Caroline'
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Schlumbergera 'Thor Caroline' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, commonly known as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its parent species originate from the coastal mountain forests of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in shaded, humid conditions. In the wild, these plants anchor themselves in mossy tree branches or rocky crevices, benefiting from filtered light, high humidity, and freely draining organic debris as their growing medium.
The stems are made up of flattened, jointed segments (phylloclades) with shallow notches along the margins. 'Thor Caroline' produces large, showy flowers in rich pink to deep rose shades, often with subtle gradients toward the petal tips. The blooms appear at the ends of mature segments and are tubular in form, adapted for pollination by hummingbirds in their native habitat. The plant develops an arching to cascading habit, making it suitable for hanging displays or elevated pots.
Flowering is triggered by shorter day lengths and cooler night temperatures, typically from late autumn to early winter. With appropriate seasonal care, it can produce an impressive floral display annually and continue to thrive for many years.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light for strong growth and flowering. Morning or late afternoon sun can be tolerated, but protect from harsh midday exposure to prevent stem scorch.
- Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during growth and flowering. Reduce watering after blooming, allowing the top layer of soil to dry before the next application.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Increase humidity by placing the plant on a pebble tray with water or by misting occasionally, especially in dry indoor air.
- Media: Use a free-draining, slightly acidic mix containing orchid bark, peat, and perlite to mimic natural epiphytic growing conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Switch to a high-potassium feed in the weeks before flowering to support bud development.
- Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C during growth. To encourage buds, provide 12–15°C nights for several weeks in autumn.
- Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, using fresh mix and a slightly larger pot if needed.
- Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or early summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, then plant in a well-draining mix.
