Schlumbergera 'Thor Sharon' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, widely known as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its parent species are native to the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in humid, shaded forests. In the wild, these cacti anchor themselves on tree branches or rocky ledges, receiving filtered light and steady moisture from their surroundings.
The flattened, jointed stem segments (phylloclades) form arching to cascading growth, each segment edged with shallow notches. 'Thor Sharon' is recognised for its large, showy flowers in vivid shades of orange-pink to salmon, often with subtle shading toward the petal tips. The blooms form at the tips of mature segments and are oriented to attract pollinators such as hummingbirds in their native environment.
This hybrid responds well to seasonal light and temperature changes, which trigger bud development. It can grow into a dense, cascading specimen over time, producing a striking floral display during its blooming period when cared for correctly.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Morning sun or late afternoon sun can be beneficial, but avoid harsh midday light which can scorch the stems.
- Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during growth and flowering. Reduce watering after the blooms fade, allowing the surface to dry before rewatering.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Increase humidity by placing the pot on a pebble tray with water or misting occasionally in dry environments.
- Media: Use a free-draining, slightly acidic potting mix containing orchid bark, peat, and perlite to replicate its natural epiphytic conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser at half strength. Before flowering season, switch to a high-potassium fertiliser to encourage bud development.
- Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C in the growing season. To set buds, provide cooler nights of 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
- Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, using fresh mix and a slightly larger pot if needed.
- Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, then plant in a well-draining mix.
