Schlumbergera (Zygocactus) Variegated

Schlumbergera, commonly known as Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus, is a small genus in the Cactaceae family native to the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil. In their natural habitat, these plants grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in shaded forested areas, often on tree branches or rocky ledges where humidity is high and light is filtered. The variegated form displays mottled or irregular cream, yellow, or pale green patterns across the flattened stem segments (phylloclades), creating a distinct ornamental effect.
The stems are segmented and jointed, each section having slightly serrated or notched edges. This variegation is due to a reduction in chlorophyll in parts of the tissue, resulting in pale patches that contrast with the normal green areas. In season, usually late spring to summer in cultivation (often winter in the northern hemisphere), the plant produces tubular flowers at the tips of the segments in a range of colours depending on the hybrid parentage. These blooms are pollinated by hummingbirds in the wild.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Variegated forms benefit from slightly higher light to maintain colour, but avoid harsh midday sun which can damage the segments.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering. Reduce watering slightly after flowering, allowing the top layer of soil to dry before watering again.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Misting or placing the pot on a pebble tray can help, particularly in dry indoor environments.
- Media: Use a free-draining, slightly acidic potting mix, such as an orchid bark and peat blend, to mimic epiphytic conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4 weeks during active growth with a balanced fertiliser diluted to half strength. Switch to a high-potassium fertiliser before the flowering season to promote bud formation.
- Temperature: Prefers 18–24°C during growth. To initiate flowering, provide cooler nights around 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
- Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, using fresh mix and a pot only slightly larger than the previous one.
- Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or early summer, allow the cut ends to callus for a day, and plant in a well-draining mix.
