Nepenthes 'Gentle'
check_circle In Stock
Nepenthes 'Gentle' is a long-established hybrid believed to be between Nepenthes maxima and Nepenthes fusca, though the exact parentage is sometimes debated among growers. It is well known in cultivation for its ease of care and tolerance of a wide range of temperatures, adapting well to both highland and intermediate conditions. This makes it a common starting point for those new to the genus, while still holding interest for experienced growers due to its strong growth and variation in pitcher colour.
The hybrid produces pitchers with a flared peristome and elongated body, traits that reflect its suspected parent species. Colouration is influenced by light levels, with green forms appearing in shadier conditions and red to purple tones developing under brighter exposure. Pitcher size can be substantial for a hybrid, often exceeding 20 cm in length when mature, and the plant is capable of producing both lower and upper pitchers in good numbers throughout the year.
Nepenthes 'Gentle' responds well to regular feeding, either through captured insects or occasional application of diluted fertiliser. It grows vigorously in hanging baskets, on trellises, or in large pots, and will readily produce side shoots if the main stem is cut back. Its adaptability, consistent pitcher formation, and capacity to cope with less-than-perfect humidity have kept it in production for decades.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, filtered light; increased light levels encourage deeper pitcher colour.
- Water: Keep the substrate consistently moist using rainwater or low-mineral water.
- Humidity: Tolerates moderate humidity but benefits from higher levels for best pitcher size.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix such as sphagnum moss with bark or perlite.
- Fertiliser: Apply very dilute orchid fertiliser occasionally to roots or into active pitchers.
- Temperature: Thrives between 18–28 °C, with tolerance for slightly cooler nights.
- Repotting: Refresh media every 1–2 years or when growth slows.
