Understanding the Shift: Dendrochilum and Pholidota in the Genus Coelogyne

Botanical classifications are evolving. Here's why some beloved orchids once labeled as Dendrochilum or Pholidota are now appearing under Coelogyne.

Orchid taxonomy has never been static. With new research—particularly from molecular phylogenetics—some genera are being reshuffled. One of the more intriguing developments is the reclassification of certain species previously known as Dendrochilum or Pholidota into the genus Coelogyne.

These changes aren't arbitrary. They're based on shared evolutionary lineages, supported by DNA data and reexaminations of floral morphology and seed structure. While this can cause temporary confusion in collections and nurseries, it’s a positive step toward scientific accuracy.

Why the Reclassification?

Historically, orchid taxonomy relied heavily on visible traits. But as DNA sequencing became more accessible, it revealed hidden relationships that visual traits alone couldn't define. In the case of Dendrochilum, Pholidota, and Coelogyne, several species showed closer genetic ties to Coelogyne than previously thought.

  • Some species classified as Dendrochilum were shown to fall within the Coelogyne clade.
  • Similarly, small-flowered Pholidota forms also aligned with Coelogyne genetically.
  • Taxonomists have opted to merge these into Coelogyne to reflect evolutionary lineage more accurately.

What This Means for Growers & Collectors

Collectors may notice new tags or listings for familiar species. Don’t worry—these are still the same plants, but now with updated, botanically accepted names. Keeping track of synonyms can be useful, especially when referencing older literature or sales lists.

What’s Next?

As orchid research progresses, we may see more changes like this. Staying informed ensures that collections are accurately labeled and helps support broader conservation and horticultural understanding.

For those curious about keeping their tags up to date, we recommend checking the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families or Kew’s Plants of the World Online for the latest accepted names.

Happy growing—and may your collection be ever evolving!
