Tillandsia butzii
Tillandsia butzii is a distinctive species native to the humid cloud forests of southern Mexico and Central America, particularly in Guatemala and Costa Rica. It typically grows at mid-elevations, anchored to trees in moist, shaded environments with consistent airflow. This species is easily recognised by its swollen, bulbous base and long, narrow leaves that twist and curl outward in elegant spirals. The smooth green leaves are often marked with dark maroon spots or streaks, especially under higher light. A slender inflorescence emerges from the centre, bearing small tubular purple to reddish flowers.
Distinctive features:
- Bulbous base tapering into long, spiralling green leaves
- Dark purple or maroon mottling along the leaf surface
- Produces a narrow, upright inflorescence with purple-red flowers
- Leaves are smooth with minimal trichome coverage
- Unique growth habit makes it a standout in mounted collections
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; avoid intense direct sun
- Water: Mist 3–5 times weekly or soak briefly; allow to dry completely between waterings
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (60–80%) with good airflow
- Media: Best mounted on cork, bark, or driftwood; avoid soil or closed terrariums
- Temperature: Ideal range is 16–28°C; sensitive to cold and frost
- Fertiliser: Apply diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during growing season
Additional Notes:
- Leaf mottling becomes more pronounced with increased light exposure
- Well-suited to mounted and hanging displays due to its shape and colour
- Occasionally flowers more than once from a mature bulb
- Not toxic to pets
