Tillandsia filifolia
Tillandsia filifolia is a graceful species native to Central America and southern Mexico, typically found growing in humid forests at mid to high elevations. It prefers shaded to filtered light environments and often grows on tree branches in areas with consistent moisture and airflow. The plant forms a spherical to upright rosette of very slender, dark green leaves that arch outward like fine threads. It produces a slender inflorescence with purple to lavender tubular flowers, sometimes with green bracts. This species is valued for its elegant appearance and tolerance of indoor conditions with moderate humidity.
Distinctive features:
- Extremely narrow, thread-like green leaves forming a fountain-like rosette
- Delicate lavender to purple flowers on a long, wiry floral stalk
- Leaves lack dense trichomes, giving a more glossy appearance than xeric species
- Compact to medium-sized, typically 12–20 cm in height
- Well-suited to hanging or suspended displays due to light structure
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade; avoid direct midday sun
- Water: Mist 3–5 times weekly or soak gently; ensure quick drying
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (60–80%) with good ventilation
- Media: Best mounted on bark or suspended in air; avoid enclosed terrariums
- Temperature: Ideal range is 14–28°C; sensitive to frost and prolonged heat
- Fertiliser: Use diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during active growth
Additional Notes:
- One of the more shade-tolerant Tillandsias
- Appealing for its soft, flowing form in suspended displays
- Best grown where air remains moist but fresh, such as near open windows or humidifiers
- Not toxic to pets
