Tillandsia flavoviolacea 'Moonlight' (WA Prohibited)
Tillandsia flavoviolacea 'Moonlight' is a cultivated form of a naturally rare species native to the cloud forests of Veracruz, Mexico. The species itself is known for its unusual floral coloration—its name derives from the Latin 'flavo' (yellow) and 'violacea' (violet). The 'Moonlight' cultivar enhances these subtle tones, producing a soft violet inflorescence often accompanied by creamy-white or pale pink bracts. Found in humid, high-altitude environments, the plant benefits from cool temperatures, steady airflow, and diffused light.
Distinctive features:
- Inflorescence exhibits soft violet to pale lavender tones, unique among cultivated forms
- Bracts are creamy with a slight blush, giving a ‘moonlit’ appearance
- Native species occurs in Mexican cloud forests, between 900–1,800 metres
- Leaves are soft green with moderate trichome coverage, aiding moisture capture
- Compact and slow-growing, ideal for display as a specimen plant
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers filtered light; avoid harsh midday sun
- Water: Mist 3–4 times per week or soak gently once weekly; never allow to stay wet for prolonged periods
- Humidity: Enjoys high humidity (60–80%) with good airflow
- Media: Mount on cork or tree fern slab; do not pot in soil
- Temperature: Optimum range is 12–24°C; does not tolerate frost
- Fertiliser: Use a weak bromeliad or tillandsia fertiliser monthly during growing season
Additional Notes:
- Rare in cultivation; the 'Moonlight' form is particularly prized by collectors
- May take several years to bloom under typical indoor conditions
- Requires patience and consistent care for best display
- Not considered toxic to pets
