Tillandsia intermedia
Tillandsia intermedia is an unusual species native to coastal and low-elevation regions of Mexico, where it grows in warm, breezy environments often suspended from trees or rock faces. This species has a distinctive form, with narrow, flexible leaves emerging from a pseudobulbous base and twisting as they elongate. It often grows in a pendant or semi-upright fashion, making it ideal for hanging displays. The plant produces a tall, slender inflorescence with red to pink bracts and violet tubular flowers. Its form and adaptability have also made it a popular parent in hybridisation.
Distinctive features:
- Pseudobulbous base with narrow, twisting grey-green leaves
- Can grow upright or pendant, depending on mounting position
- Tall, slender floral spike with reddish bracts and violet flowers
- Leaves are lightly trichomed, suited to bright, dry conditions
- Native to coastal and tropical deciduous forests in Mexico
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect to filtered sun; can tolerate more sun with acclimation
- Water: Mist 2–4 times weekly or soak occasionally; ensure full drying within a few hours
- Humidity: Performs well in moderate to high humidity with airflow
- Media: Mount upside-down or upright on cork or driftwood; avoid soil or enclosed spaces
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–32°C; protect from frost
- Fertiliser: Use diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during the growing season
Additional Notes:
- Striking in hanging or wire-mounted displays due to its twisting form
- Rare in cultivation but appreciated for its sculptural growth
- Parent of several notable Tillandsia hybrids
- Not toxic to pets
