Tillandsia ionantha 'Evolution'
Tillandsia ionantha 'Evolution' is a specially selected cultivar of Tillandsia ionantha, appreciated for its consistent growth habit and smooth, gradual transition in foliage colour during its blooming cycle. Like the species, it originates from Mesoamerican forests, where it grows epiphytically on trees in bright, humid conditions. What sets 'Evolution' apart is its refined form and a more even blush from green to peach, pink, and eventually deep red as it approaches flowering. The plant produces violet tubular flowers from the centre, adding contrast to its changing foliage tones.
Distinctive features:
- Exhibits a smooth colour gradient during bloom, from green to peach to red
- Produces violet tubular flowers from the central rosette
- Compact size, typically 4–6 cm tall, forming neat, symmetrical clusters
- Leaves are soft with dense silvery trichomes
- Uniform growth makes it popular for decorative arrangements
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; colour intensifies with increased light exposure
- Water: Mist 3–4 times weekly or soak briefly once per week; always allow to dry fully
- Humidity: Performs best in moderate to high humidity with good airflow
- Media: Mount on bark, cork, or display in open terrariums with ventilation
- Temperature: Thrives in 16–30°C; protect from cold and frost
- Fertiliser: Use diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during active growth
Additional Notes:
- Popular among collectors for its reliable form and colour transitions
- Ideal for small-scale displays, mounted pieces, or terrariums
- May be slower to offset than some other ionantha types, but grows uniformly
- Not toxic to pets
