Tillandsia ionantha 'Evolution'
Tillandsia ionantha 'Evolution' is a cultivar of T. ionantha noted for its distinctive colour change during bloom, where the foliage transitions from green to a blend of pink and red tones. Compared to the standard ionantha, 'Evolution' often displays a more uniform and saturated blush, especially under high light conditions. It produces tubular purple flowers and forms tight clumps over time. Native to Central America, the parent species typically grows on trees or rocks in warm, humid environments, including regions of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Distinctive features:
- Exhibits a smooth colour gradient during bloom, from green to peach to red
- Produces violet tubular flowers from the central rosette
- Compact size, typically 4–6 cm tall, forming neat, symmetrical clusters
- Leaves are soft with dense silvery trichomes
- Uniform growth makes it popular for decorative arrangements
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; colour intensifies with increased light exposure
- Water: Mist 3–4 times weekly or soak briefly once per week; always allow to dry fully
- Humidity: Performs best in moderate to high humidity with good airflow
- Media: Mount on bark, cork, or display in open terrariums with ventilation
- Temperature: Thrives in 16–30°C; protect from cold and frost
- Fertiliser: Use diluted tillandsia fertiliser monthly during active growth
Additional Notes:
- Popular among collectors for its reliable form and colour transitions
- Ideal for small-scale displays, mounted pieces, or terrariums
- May be slower to offset than some other ionantha types, but grows uniformly
- Not toxic to pets
