Tillandsia stricta 'Silver'
Tillandsia stricta 'Silver' is a cultivated selection of the widely distributed Tillandsia stricta, chosen for its pronounced silvery foliage and refined growth habit. Native populations of the species occur across Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, often found growing on tree branches in warm, humid forests. The 'Silver' form displays pale grey-green leaves with dense trichome coverage, enhancing its ability to thrive in brighter and drier conditions. When in bloom, it produces vibrant pink bracts and soft violet flowers, often more vividly contrasted against the light foliage than in the typical green form.
Distinctive features:
- Silvery-grey leaves due to dense trichome coverage
- Produces rose-pink bracts with pale violet flowers
- Compact rosette reaching 10–15 cm in diameter
- Foliage appears more reflective and matte compared to the standard form
- Clumps readily through multiple offsets following bloom
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; tolerates early morning sun
- Water: Mist 2–4 times per week or soak briefly once a week; dry completely within a few hours
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate humidity with good air movement
- Media: Mount on bark, driftwood, or hang freely; avoid potting media
- Temperature: Ideal range is 16–30°C; avoid exposure to frost
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted tillandsia fertiliser once a month during growth
Additional Notes:
- Brighter light encourages a stronger silver tone in the foliage
- Well-suited for vertical displays, wire frames, or cork bark mounts
- Compact and resilient, ideal for beginners and collectors alike
- Not toxic to pets
