Sundews (Drosera) Quick Care Guide & Cultivar Showcase

Sundews (Drosera) Quick Care Guide & Cultivar Showcase

Key Requirements (Quick Reference)

Sundews are highly popular due to their sticky tentacles, but care depends entirely on the variety. You must know if your plant is Temperate (needs cold rest) or Sub-Tropical (needs warmth).

  • Water Purity: Requires pure, low-TDS water via the tray method. Never use tap water. Learn the Zero-Tolerance Rule here.
  • Light: Requires bright light or full sun to produce robust red colouration and sticky dew.
  • Dormancy: Varies dramatically by species. Check the showcase below against our full guide on Drosera Dormancy Management.

Cultivar Showcase: Our Inventory

This list specifies the dormancy and growth habit of the main Sundew species we carry. Links are provided to currently stocked items.

Sub-Tropical Sundews (No Dormancy Required)

These plants grow year-round and must be kept warm in winter. They are ideal beginner plants.

  • Drosera capensis (Cape Sundew): The classic, most resilient Sundew. Forms strap-like, upright leaves. Ideal for beginners.
  • Drosera spatulata (Spoon-leaf Sundew): Forms a small, compact, flat rosette. Known for easy growth and producing tiny offsets.

Temperate Sundews (Mandatory Dormancy)

These plants require 2–3 months of cold rest during the Australian winter.

  • Drosera filiformis (Thread-leaf Sundew): Forms striking, tall, needle-like leaves. Dies back completely to a hibernaculum in winter.
