Jewel Orchid Care Guide (Ludisia, Macodes, Anoectochilus)

Jewel orchids are terrestrial orchids grown for their foliage rather than their flowers.

They differ from most commonly grown orchids in both habitat and behaviour, and should be grown using different methods.

In nature, they occur on the forest floor in shaded environments where moisture is consistent and conditions are stable.

Although they are orchids, they should not be grown using standard epiphytic orchid practices.

What makes jewel orchids different?

Most orchids are epiphytes, growing on trees with exposed roots and high airflow.

Jewel orchids are terrestrial. They grow through leaf litter and organic material, where moisture is retained and root disturbance is minimal.

This difference determines how they should be grown in cultivation.

Light

Jewel orchids prefer low to moderate light.

  • No direct sunlight
  • Bright, indirect light is suitable
  • They tolerate lower light levels than most indoor plants

Excessive light will reduce leaf colour intensity and diminish the visibility of the veining.

Water

The growing medium should remain evenly moist.

  • Allow the surface to begin drying before watering again
  • Do not allow the root zone to dry completely
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging

Consistent moisture is more important than frequent or heavy watering.

Humidity

Jewel orchids benefit from moderate to high humidity but will adapt to typical indoor conditions.

  • Ludisia is generally more tolerant of lower humidity
  • Macodes and Anoectochilus prefer stable conditions

Avoid exposure to heaters, air conditioning, or strong air movement.

Growing Medium

A fine, moisture-retentive growing medium is required.

  • Do not use coarse orchid bark mixes
  • A blend of fine bark, peat or coco coir, and perlite is suitable
  • The medium should retain moisture while draining freely

Repot when the medium begins to break down or lose structure.

Temperature

Jewel orchids are warm-growing plants.

  • Ideal range: 18–28°C
  • Avoid temperatures below 12°C

Stable temperatures will produce the most consistent growth.

Feeding

Jewel orchids require only light feeding.

  • Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser during active growth
  • Reduce or stop feeding during cooler periods

Common mistakes

  • Providing excessive light
  • Allowing the plant to dry out completely
  • Using coarse orchid bark designed for epiphytes
  • Allowing degraded media to remain in use
  • Applying standard orchid care methods to terrestrial species

Differences between common types

  • Ludisia – more tolerant of variation in humidity and watering
  • Macodes – valued for reflective veining, requires stable conditions
  • Anoectochilus – variable in form, generally less tolerant of inconsistency

Summary

Jewel orchids should be grown as terrestrial understory plants.

Provide low to moderate light, consistent moisture, and a fine, stable growing medium.

When these conditions are maintained, plants will develop strong foliage and clear, defined veining.
