Origin and Habitat: Tanzania, Malawi (Mt. Mdima ), Mozambique ( Sérra de Ribáuè, Mepáluè and Ruo River.)
Altitude: 800-1400 m over sea level.
Habitat: Grows among rocks and in crevices sometime on rocky island in rivers falls and rapids.
Humilis is a very attractive species able to be grown in a wide variety of conditions from fully exposed gardens to hanging baskets in heavy shade.
The species is very hardy and forms a small clustering plant with heads to 8cm and numerous offsets, Upright flower spikes appear in early Spring.
Position
- full sun or partial shade. Great in gardens, borders, rockeries, pots and hanging baskets. Indoors only in sunny positions otherwise they will lose their nice shape and colour.
- can be watered all year round and grows fastest in the warmer months. Plants will survive without water for very long periods.
Feeding
- 25% of recommended dosage monthly in growing period. The less fertiliser, the better the shape of the plant. Fertilisers high in nitrogen can produce larger plants with less colour.
Repotting
- can be left to overgrow their pots or repotted in the warmer months in almost any well drained potting
