That's an easy one. NO!!!
In nature most cultivated orchids are epiphytes and that means they simply hang off, or on too other trees.
They take nothing from the host trees,simply hang on with their substantial root systems.
The roots obviously take up water and nutrients and I have ALWAYS said that a good root system is more important than a good top half of the Orchid.
